Lederboot: camaraderie in opposition to society's perception of homosexuals as "weak"

This series, which I started and finished this year is comprised of five (open-ended, I may do more) ink illustrations of leather clothes and gear in different positions. My goal was to create a high amount of contrast in each piece, as well as to create a sense of intimidation or power through these compositions.

As a kid I loved the tiny leather jacket I got for my 10th birthday and wore it whenever I could- it made me feel tough. This is an experience historically many queer people have lived, as many gay leather biker clubs originate in the 1950's, developing their own identities and traditions that helped many men during the Lavender Scare. Women who participated in this subculture were far less visible, but played a big role in the development of feminism in the 1970-80s.

These accesories and articles of clothing are more than just that- they tie together historically oppressed groups of people-representing pride and power as well as the taboo.
