Lederboot: camaraderie in opposition to society's perception of homosexuals as "weak"

This series, which I started and finished this year is comprised of five (open-ended, I may do more) ink illustrations of leather clothes and gear in different positions. My goal was to create a high amount of contrast in each piece, as well as to create a sense of intimidation or power through these compositions.

The experience of feeling tough or protected through clothing and self-expression historically many queer people have lived, as many gay leather biker clubs originate in the 1950's, developing their own identities and traditions that helped many men during the Lavender Scare. Women who participated in this subculture were far less visible, but played a big role in the development of feminism in the 1970-80s.

These accesories and articles of clothing are more than just that- they tie together historically oppressed groups of people-representing pride and power as well as the taboo.

Katabasis: descents to a lower realm

In Greek mythology, a "katabasis" refers to a journey into the underworld and also into one's self, where the traveller must confront elements of their own psyche. These ink on paper illustrations are meant to express a journey downwards, to another realm or a challenging situation or period of depression- the deer, as "lower life forms" represent this change. The successful completion of a katabasis often implies a transformation or gaining of wisdom. In this way, our own trips to rock bottom are part of a larger hero's journey.
